Studies on the Chlorophylls and Photosynthesis of Thermal Algae from Yellowstone National Park, California, and Nevada
نویسنده
چکیده
1. Myxophyceae normally growing at 65 degrees C. evolved oxygen upon irradiation and showed evidence of retaining the power to carry on the process of photosynthesis at 20 degrees C. This indicates that extra thermal energy is not essential for photosynthesis at least over a short period of time. 2. Chlorophyll a and b found in several species of Myxophyceae growing in waters ranging in temperature from 37-72 degrees C. are essentially the same as found in plants growing all over the world. Certain standard chemical tests and spectroscopic examination of the chlorophylls were used as the criteria for these comparisons. The ratio of chlorophyll a to b often varied considerably but in general chlorophyll a showed an increase over the percentage found in most plants. 3. Green algae (Chlorella sp.?) were the only forms found at The Geysers, California. The temperature of the waters from which collections were made varied from 49-66 degrees C. 4. Collections from Beowawe, Nevada were from waters ranging from 60-71 degrees C. The algae belonged to the Myxophyceae and the species were like some of those found in Yellowstone National Park. 5. In some of the calcareous regions of Yellowstone National Park spectroscopic study of the chlorophylls revealed an unidentified absorption band at 548 mmicro.

Environmental constraints defining the distribution, composition, and evolution of chlorophototrophs in thermal features of Yellowstone National Park.
Chlorophotoautotrophy, the use of chlorophylls to convert light energy into chemical energy for carbon dioxide fixation, is the primary metabolic process linking the inorganic and organic carbon pools on Earth. To understand the potential effects of various environmental constraints on the evolution of chlorophototrophy better, we studied the distribution, diversity, and abundance of chlorophyl...
متن کاملAlgal species and light microenvironment in a low-pH, geothermal microbial mat community.
Unicellular algae are the predominant microbial mat-forming phototrophs in the extreme environments of acidic geothermal springs. The ecology of these algae is not well known because concepts of species composition are inferred from cultivated isolates and microscopic observations, methods known to provide incomplete and inaccurate assessments of species in situ. We used sequence analysis of 18...
متن کاملProcesses Governing Arsenic Geochemistry in the Thermal Waters of Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park, USA, has more than 10,000 thermal features throughout a land area of 2.2x10 acres (just short of a million hectares). These characteristics make it unique among the world’s geothermal areas and, consequently, it has been the subject of numerous geological, geochemical, and ecological studies. Past and current research related to arsenic in the thermal waters of Yellow...
متن کاملRepresentative Pathways of Excitation Migration in Photosystem I
Photosystem I is a protein-pigment complex that performs photosynthesis in plants, green algae, and cyanobacteria. It contains an aggregate of chlorophylls that absorbs light and delivers the resulting electronic excitation to the special pair of chlorophylls where the excitation energy is used for producing charge separation across the cell membrane. The seemingly random arrangement of chlorop...
متن کاملCharacterization of some thermophilic bacteria from the Hot Springs of Yellowstone National Park.
Extensive enzymatic studies have been conducted on cell-free fractions from a thermophilic bacterium designated as National Canners Association strain 2184 and tentativelv identified as Bacillus stearothermophilus Donk (1920), (Militzer et al., 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952; Georgi et al., 1951; h'Iarsh and Militzer, 1952). Preparatory to extending these investigations to other thermophilic bacteria, ...
